Soccer superstar Lionel Messi has publicly acknowledged for the first time that he is expecting his first child with girlfriend, Antonella Roccuzzo.

The Barcelona and Argentina forward made the announcement on Saturday in Cancún, Mexico, at the end of a charity match to promote the Leo Messi Foundation.

"We did not want to say anything because we never talk about our private life, but we were constantly asked about it, so we wanted to share our joy," said Messi.

"Both my family and Antonella's are over the moon."

The 24-year-old had been tight-lipped when questioned about the reports that he was expecting his first child with his partner, after his special celebration of his goal in Argentina's 4-0 victory against Ecuador in a World Cup qualifier earlier this month.

Dutch midfielder Royston Drenthe, on loan to Everton, was quoted in a Dutch magazine as saying he was taunted by the three-time Fifa player of the year during several of their Spanish league encounters.

''The player has always shown a maximum respect and sportsmanship towards his rivals, something which has been recognised by his fellow professionals many times, and we are sure that any accusations to the contrary are well wide of the mark,'' Barcelona said in a statement on Thursday. ''His behavior throughout his career has always been exemplary.''

Drenthe, who is black, claims Messi used the word ''negro'' in a negative tone. Liverpool's Luis Suarez was suspended for eight games this season for taunting Manchester United's Patrice Evra with the same word seven times in a match between the teams.

Drenthe was quoted as telling Helden magazine that he was ''bothered'' by the tone in which Messi ''always called me 'negro, negro.'''
